The legal basis are the Education Documentation Act (Bildungsdokumentationsgesetz 2020) and the Regulation on the Statistics of Universities and Academic Institutions and on the Education Documentation (UHSBV).

Main source are the Registers of the Academic Institutions and data from the survey at the end of studies about study-related stays abroad (UHStat2). A key figure is the number of graduations in Austrian academic institutions.
