Research and experimental development (R&D) comprise creative and systematic work undertaken in order to increase the stock of knowledge and to devise new applications of available knowledge. It has the potential to contribute considerably to progress, welfare and economic growth. This new knowledge can be used to tackle needs and challenges and to improve societal wellbeing altogether.

This publication gives an overview on R&D expenditures and R&D personnel 2021 in all economic sectors. Those are classified – among others – by sectors of performance and funding, industry, fields of research and development and regions. R&D personnel is additionally classified by occupation, sex and education in headcounts and full-time equivalents. Furthermore, funding of R&D in the federal budget is analysed.
