Spatial population projections

Urban areas grow, peripheral regions lose population
Number and proportion of older people rising in all regions
Rural areas are losing people of working age

This small-scale population forecast 2021 to 2050 was prepared on behalf of the Austrian Conference on Spatial Planning (ÖROK) by Statistik Austria in cooperation with Joanneum Research Forschungsgesellschaft mbH. It is structured according to the statutory cities, political districts of Austria as well as the municipal districts of Vienna, i.e. a total of 121 forecast regions. Due to the low number of inhabitants, the statutory city of Rust is combined with the district of Eisenstadt-Umgebung to form one forecast region. A total of 6 districts (4 in Lower Austria and one each in Upper Austria and Vorarlberg) are divided into 2 forecast regions in order to aggregate the 35 NUTS-3 regions of Austria from the forecast results. Furthermore, the forecast is also subdivided according to the characteristics age, gender and country of birth (born in Austria/abroad).
