As part of the statistics on deaths, the statistics on infant deaths have a tradition going back to the 18th century, in the sense of a systematic recording of deaths by the religious communities. Since 1945, they have been based on the reports of the registry offices of Austria intended for administrative purposes, which in turn are partly based on reports of hospitals and medical examiners on the cause of death. Since 1 November 2014, reports on infant deaths have been automatically transmitted daily from the Central Civil Status Register to Statistics Austria. Since 2015, all deaths abroad of infants with Austrian citizenship whose main residence was in Austria have also been recorded. Data on infant deaths is published according to the last place of residence and supplemented with the medical characteristics of the birth.
