According to the definitions of the International Labour Organization (ILO), persons are considered to be employed if they have worked at least one hour in the reference week as employees, self-employed persons or family workers. If they have not worked during the reference week due to holidays, illness, parental leave, etc., but are otherwise engaged in work, they are also considered to be in employment.

Employed persons can be represented according to gender, age, education, nationality, professional status (self-employed, employees), occupational groups (ISCO), economic sector (ÖNACE) and regional characteristics. The number of employed persons as a share of the population of certain age groups (employment rate) is shown here, as are time series. The results come from the Microcensus Labour Force Survey (sample survey) as well as the Register-based Census and the Register-based Labour Market Statistics (administrative data).
